Families From Within was born as a publication project inviting families to share with each other the trials and joys of birth and family life. This blog offers a day-by-day transcription of the content of that book, which involved hundreds of people over several years, but also serves to invite further participation and discussion. Those who wrote these stories did so not as writers or analysts, but as family members: mothers and fathers, children and grandparents.
Their stories are grouped under themes such as “Creating a family”, “Labour”, “First days of the newborn”, and “Roles and responsibilities”. The accompanying illustrations were created from photographs sent to us by families.
We hoped the book and now, this site will provide a substitute for the exchange of information that once occurred naturally in communities, and that it will lessen the isolation sometimes felt by today’s families. We welcome your stories to add to the glimpses we’ve already received of the exquisite diversity of family life.
